I can no longer offer the GC028 Automatic coupler. The pattern is going back to the owner. Perhaps he will offer it again in 2021.

The foundry I use has become rather busy. As a result, I cannot guarantee the availability of anything shown here. I have a ready supply of the smaller parts but larger parts might require a wait of a number of weeks. I would, of course, not expect payment until parts are ready to ship. Local pickup (near Scotts Valley, CA) is strongly encouraged.

I have drawings for many of these parts. Click here:   Drawing List

The drawings shown below for trucks and other assemblies are concept drawings intended to aid my design of the castings. They are not complete construction drawings and serve only as guides or suggestions  to actual construction.

A note about my part and drawing numbering scheme:

Car Parts

I have castings for three styles of arch-bar trucks.   In all of the following tables I will show my casting number, what is included, and the number of casting numbers to order to build one CAR (usually two TRUCKS plus other castings).

Because the narrow gauge South Pacific Coast railroad grade is across the creek from our property, I started with castings to build a Carter Brothers style truck. Carter Brothers trucks date from the late 1870's and have wooden transoms (cross members), bolsters and spring planks. They were made as swing-motion trucks, where the bolster beam and spring assembly were suspended from hangers to move with the car body independently from the rest of the truck. This was meant to provide a better riding truck and was widely used up through the 1880's.

The SPC group built a pair of these trucks some years ago and here is a link to detailed pictures of the assembly: SPC Truck

Here are castings to build a very common arch bar truck. This shows a wooden spring plank. A stronger version would use a 4 inch channel as the spring plank.

.
The Thielsen truck actually appears in the 1879 Car Builders Dictionary. When the Carson and Colorado ordered new cars in 1882, they specified Thielsen trucks. What is surprising is that these trucks were made with formed steel channels for transoms in an age when wood was still common as truck structural members. Because the transoms and arch bars were riveted to cast iron ends, they were very strong and durable. After the Southern Pacific bought the C&C and created their own design for trucks, the result was only slightly changed from the original Thielsen design. The center, which was a casting on the original design, is easily fabricated as a weldment.

The large pedestal was originally intended to use to build disconnected log trucks. This drawing shows a very simple example made mostly of wood

6" Utility Wheels

6 inch wheels

These wheels are from an old pattern for some sort of industrial wheel. They are NOT to any scale but could be used for push cars or other maintenance-of-way cars. From the size of the hub (2 3/4"), they probably were meant for some sort of internal roller bearing.  They are cored to 1 1/8". The tread diameter is 6" - rough. The flanges are 5/16" high (low for 5" scale) and the overall width is  1 3/4". You could also use these to built a miniature mine car.

Something a little bit different

Dirt Train
The Dirt Train

Dump cars were built in gauges from 18 inch to standard gauge and used in many industrial settings. One of my memories of my grandfather was his telling me he ran a "dinky" steam locomotive on a railroad construction project in Montana around 1910. His train may well have been cars like these.

Seattle Car and Foundry
SC&F Dump Car

My inspiration is this page from a Seattle Car and Foundry catalog. It is not clear whether the pedestal jaws are a casting or a fabrication. I designed a pedestal jaw casting that looks appropriate.

This matches the undercarriage of the SC&F car pretty well and is fabricated mostly  from steel shapes.

Locomotive Castings

Switcher

Switcher bearing housing
Every railroad needs a little gas or diesel switcher. The minimum castings needed include the drivers, the couplers, the brake shoes, and the journal boxes. This journal box is 5 1/2 by 5 inches, sized for a 40 x 80 x 30.2 mm double row ball bearing. It is just a box with a cavity to be machined out and a cover. You can tell your riders the big "W" stands for Whitcomb. The box and cover is GC019

..

Loco poling pocket
GC024 - Poling pocket for car or locomotive. A design like the elliptical poling pockets used on small Porter steam locomotives. Order 2 or 4 for one locomotive.

GC023 - Locomotive link and pin coupler pocket and fancy pin. This is patterned after the coupler pockets used on very small narrow gauge 0-4-0 locomotives, such as Porter or Davenport. This is perhaps small enough to be used on a 3" scale locomotive.

Stack 19 inch
Stack, 19" tall - GC026
This pattern was originally intended for a smoke box diameter of 10 1/2". I built up the pattern to fit a diameter of 12 3/4". The casting can be  machined or ground to fit  diameters throughout this range.
